WASHINGTON — Senate Democrats won a crucial test vote on President Barack Obama’s health care overhaul, putting them on track for passage before Christmas of the historic legislation to remake the nation’s medical system and cover 30 million uninsured.
All 58 Democrats and the Senate’s two independents held together early Monday against unanimous Republican opposition, providing the exact 60-40 margin needed to shut down a threatened GOP filibuster.
The vote came shortly after 1 a.m. with the nation’s capital blanketed in snow, the unusual timing made necessary in order to get to a final vote by Christmas Eve presuming Republicans stretch out the debate as much as the rules allow. Despite the late hour and a harshly partisan atmosphere, Democrats’ spirits were high.

Happy winter solstice!
At 11:47 am CST today, Monday, December 21, 2009, the sun will reach the Tropic of Capricorn at 23.5 degrees south latitude, and winter will officially begin.
Today marks the shortest daylight hours of the year, with 9 hours of possible sunlight for Milwaukee. With all the clouds in the area, we shouldn’t see any of that possible sunshine today.
Daylight hours will now increase every day. Tomorrow’s daylight hours will be a whopping 2 seconds longer than today’s.

CHICAGO, Dec 21 (Reuters) – CVS Caremark Corp (CVS.N) said on Monday that Per Lofberg would become president of its pharmacy benefits management business next month, and increased its investment in the healthcare company he co-founded.
Lofberg will become president of the PBM business on Jan. 4. He is taking over after Howard McLure stepped down in November, following CVS’s admission that its PBM business lost billions of dollars in contracts heading into 2010. [ID:nN05502370]
Lofberg is the president, chief executive and co-founder of Generation Health, a genetic benefit management company in which CVS took a minority stake in last month. [ID:nN10308147] On Monday, CVS said it would take an increased ownership stake in Generation Health, which will be run as a separate business.

WASHINGTON (CBS/AP) – Drop that snowball!
Washington, D.C. police are investigating reports that a detective brandished his gun during a mass snowball fight on a city street after an Internet video surfaced that appears to show the incident.
Police said Monday they were looking into reports that a plainclothes officer pulled a gun after he and his personal car were hit by snowballs. Police say witness accounts and videos from the scene appeared to support the claims.
Hundreds of people were involved in the snowball fight during Saturday’s record snowstorm.
A video posted on YouTube shows a black man wearing tan pants, a crème colored top and dark jacket standing next to a maroon Hummer. He appears to be holding a gun in his left hand and a walkie-talkie in his right hand. At one point in the video he identifies himself as Detective Baylor.
On the video, which is edited, someone says, "This dude has a gun in his hand. He’s driving a Hummer and people are throwing snowballs at him. It does not seem like a good idea."
While it’s easy for us to predict the decline, and ultimate death of mainstream media, I wonder if we know what we’re letting ourselves in for. Take, for example, the recent incident that involved a Washington D.C. detective and a “tweetup” snowball fight.
Mashable alerted me to the story. With a couple of pics and a video, it’s easy to believe that the cop overreacted and should lose his job.

Jill Kinmont was a good skier who almost went to the Olympics in 1956. In 1955, Jill Kinmont had an accident on the ski slopes. Kinmont fell and became paralyzed. She was almost 19 years old.
Jill Kinmont had a good rehab and went on to graduate from college. Kinmont took on the vocation of being a teacher. Kinmont suffered a second great tragedy when her good friend and boyfriend, Dick Buek, was killed in a plane accident.
Two movies were made out of Jill Kinmont’s life. “The Other Side Of The Mountain” and “The Other Side Of The Mountain II” were based on the life story of Jill Kinmont.

While the agency will be closed, unemployed workers can still contact the agency’s automated MARVIN system to claim their eligibility for unemployment benefits.
“MARVIN (Michigan’s Automated Response Voice Interactive Network) does not take time off for the holidays,” UIA Director Stephen Geskey said. “So, while our offices will be closed on the next two Thursdays and Fridays, December 24 and 25, and December 31 and January 1, MARVIN will be available by telephone or through the Internet all week, Monday through Friday, and even on Saturday, December 26.”
